The case of the offensive cartoon

Cartoonist Harish Yadav drew a cartoon showing Narendra Modi naked and wearing a Muslim skull cap and was jailed following a complaint that the cartoon was hurtful and disrespectful. The Hindu carried a story that seemed to imply that the BJP had something to do with it. Then it turned out, thanks to an Indian Express story, that the man who complained about it was a Muslim and wanted the cartoonist punished because he thought the cartoon was disrespectful towards Islam.

This should be about freedom of expression, but it won’t be. Instead of this being about a cartoonist’s right to have his say in a way he thinks is right, this will be made into something ugly about the BJP, “communalism”, and the sanctity of “religious sentiments”. One fine circus this is!
